Hey, fellow adventurers! šāļø
If youāre craving a travel experience packed with a blend of vibrant cities, stunning nature, and mouthwatering food, Malaysia is the place to be. From the skyscrapers of Kuala Lumpur to the tropical vibes of Langkawi, my 6-day journey through this beautiful country was nothing short of incredible. Hereās a day-by-day breakdown of how I spent my time in Malaysia. Letās dive in!
Day 1: Welcome to Kuala Lumpur!
After a smooth flight into Kuala Lumpur, we landed at 10:20 AM, grabbed a bagel at the airport (because, why not?), and hopped in a Grab (a local ride-share app) to our hostel for about $14. The weather was hotā94Ā°F (34Ā°C)āso we took it easy and wandered over to the KL Eco Forest Park. The canopy walk was cool, but the bamboo walk? Not so much, so if youāre short on time, maybe skip it.
Craving some caffeine, I popped into Tealive for matcha, but honestly, I wasnāt impressedāit was a bit off. So, I decided to rehydrate with a Gatorade and water from 7-Eleven before heading back to the hostel to freshen up.
Later, we ventured out for dinner to Betel Leaf, an Indian restaurant where we treated ourselves to Chicken Tikka Masala, Malia Kofta, garlic naan, and a side of rice. The flavors were spot-on, and it filled me up nicely for $12.
I wrapped up my first day in KL by getting some snacks for the morning (banana and a chocolate croissant) and went to bed early to recover from the jet lag.
Day 2: Batu Caves & Spa Day
Jet lag hit hard on Day 2, waking me up at 3 AM (yikes), but after some tossing and turning, I finally got up at 6 AM. I ate my snacks and we ordered a Grab for $3 to the Batu Caves. Let me tell you, the golden statue of Lord Murugan here is absolutely massive and breathtaking. There were monkeys everywhere, and they were so cute! We climbed the 272 steps up to the cavesādefinitely worth it for the view.
Afterward, we grabbed another Grab and headed to Walking on Sunshine Hair Spa (fancy, right?) for a relaxing head spaā$32 well spent followed by a much-needed matcha latte at Kenny Hills Coffee (highly recommend).
Nearby was a grocery store, so Maxlynn and I got some fun snacks to try like a chicken curry puff, salt and vinegar puff popcorn and their version of a chicken pot pie. We walked around the little town we were in Solaris MontāKiara and got a few snacks along the way, including a red bean doughnut, something called a Soft France which was basically a hot dog with onions, Custard Sweet Potato, and a Chicken Breast Sandwich from Villa Ju Bakery.
Later that evening, we headed to Katsuri Walk ********************
Day 3: Petaling Street, Vertigo Bar, and the Petronas Towers
Today was packed with food and sightseeing. First, I grabbed a quick breakfast at McDonald’s (McChicken + fries, classic travel breakfast) for just $3, then hit up the Petaling Street Market. I tried mango smoothies, potstickers, and dim sum (a bao bun and chicken dumplings). Everything was super cheap and delicious!
Next, I headed to Vertigo Bar for a drink and to catch the stunning sunset. Afterward, it was time to visit the Petronas Twin Towersāseriously, the coolest skyscraper Iāve ever seen. The light show outside was magical.
For a late-night snack, I grabbed fruit tarts and a Nutella banana muffin from the mall’s grocery store. I ended my day with a bit of a Grab dramaāwaiting 45 minutes for a ride, only to cancel and order a new one. Oh well, thatās travel for you!
Day 4: Farewell KL, Hello Langkawi!
I couldnāt stay in Kuala Lumpur forever, so after paying the $30 tourist tax and checking out of my hostel, I hopped in a Grab to the airport ($75 MYR). The flight to Langkawi was quick, and upon arrival, I headed straight to the Gecko Guesthouse for a cozy night in.
Langkawi was calling, and I couldnāt resist trying the tofu baguette at Yellow Beach CafĆ© ($6.50). The rainy weather didnāt stop me from enjoying the waffles with chocolate ($5.60) for a sweet treat. Dinner was an attempt at chicken and sticky rice, but it was a bit hit or miss. At least the rainy vibes were perfect for a chill evening at the guesthouse.
Day 5: Langkawi Adventures ā Sky Bridges & Scooters
Day 5 was action-packed! After dealing with an ant infestation in Maxlynnās backpack (because she had pizza…oops), we rented a scooter ($7) and set off for an adventure. Our first stop? The Langkawi Cable Car and Sky Bridgeāyou guys, this cable car is the steepest in the world, and the view from the top was breathtaking.
Post-cable car, we refueled with snacks from 7-Eleven (chips, $0.87), and dinner at Hiddenāa gorgeous restaurant with live music, perfect for a sunset meal. I had a chicken burger, fries, and a coconut matcha that hit the spot for $12.56.
After dinner, we tried to catch the famous fire show at the beach, but as luck would have it, it started pouring rain again. Still, we ended up at a little dessert shop and had an impromptu stop for an iced chocolate shake ($10.50). Gotta love the unpredictability of travel!
Day 6: Beach Time, Roti Canai, and Last-Minute Fun
For our last full day in Langkawi, we had a lazy morning (thank you, rain). We grabbed breakfast from 7-Elevenāa chocolate croissant, a yogurt shot, and some water for $7. Then, we made our way to the beach, where we spent a couple of hours reading our books, constantly shifting our towels to avoid the sun.
For lunch, we stopped by a little local restaurant and had the most delicious egg sandwich on fresh homemade sourdough, plus the best roti canai (or as the chef called it, āChinese pancakeā) with Nutella and honey. $18 well spent!
We decided to get pizza at a beachside spot, but it was a major letdown (a solid 4/10). So, we went back to the little hut restaurant and grabbed another roti canai (this time with guitar serenades). The night ended with a mojito and a view of the fire show at Kruta Beachāa perfect, peaceful ending to an unforgettable trip.
Final Thoughts:
Malaysia, you were a total vibe! From the chaos of Kuala Lumpur to the serene beaches of Langkawi, this trip was packed with adventure, food, and plenty of unexpected moments. If you’re planning a trip, 2.5 days in Kuala Lumpur is plenty for all the major sights (with some chill time in between), and Langkawi is the perfect spot for a laid-back beach escape.
Until next time, Malaysia! Terima kasih (thank you) for the memories! š“āØ
